Suspects sought in distracted burglary of elderly woman

NEWINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)– Police are looking for the two people who distracted an elderly woman Tuesday, so they could burglarize her Newington home.

Police say an elderly woman was sweeping her front porch around 2:30 PM when she was approached by a man who wanted to talk to her about shubbery on her property line. The suspect told the woman he was hired by the adjacent property owners who were looking to have the shrubbery removed.

While the suspect led the woman into the backyard to distract her, an accomplice entered the home to steal money and jewelry.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, between 5’6″ to 5’8″ tall, weighing between 160 lbs-200 lbs and being clean shaven with short hair. He also was believed to be wearing a navy blue t-shirt and jeans.

Anyone with information on the crime is urged to contact Newington police at 860-666-8445.

Police say this is a common scam and are asking the public to be aware that it’s occurring in an effort to reduce the number or victims.
