NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)- Police arrested a 17-year-old man for a shooting that happened early on June 16.

Police say 31-year-old James Turner was shot in the left hand and abdomen around 4AM. Turner was taken by his cousing to Yale and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the shooting happened when the suspect was getting cigarettes from Turner. Turner told police he was talking with the teenager, when the teen got mad, grabbed a knife and came at him. Turner told police he took the knife from the suspect, but as the teen left the house, he fired a gun, hitting Turner.

Police arrested the teenager at the hospital, where he was being treated, because he was under the influence of drugs.

The teen has since been released, and is in police custody.
