Woman charged with DUI for school bus crash

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A New Haven woman was arrested on DUI charges after driving into the back of a school bus Tuesday morning.

Police say around 9:03 AM, a school bus was turning left from Orchard Street on to Ella T. Grasso Boulevard when the rear of the bus was struck by a car traveling south on Orchard Street.

The car then veered off and hit a utility pole

Eight children, ranging from 6 to 14 years old from the nearby King Robinson School, were on the bus at the time of the accident. They were taken to Yale-New Haven hospital for an evaluation but police say none had any evident injuries.

The bus driver was not injured.

The driver of the car, 43-year-old Brenda Dasilva, told police she recently smoked marijuana and had taken at least four prescription pills before driving. She was charged with DUI, eight count of risk of injury to a minor and operating with a suspended license.

She was not injured in the accident.
