Police ID boy killed in ATV accident

Joseph Awlaswicz

ROXBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — State police have identified the 11-year-old boy killed in an ATV accident in the woods of Roxbury Thursday night.

About four hours after he was reported missing on his ATV, Joseph Awlaswicz was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7 p.m. Thursday in the woods off Carriage Lane.

Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said Thursday that the incident appeared to be purely accidental. Vance said Friday that the boy was an experienced ATV rider and he was wearing a helmet when he went out Thursday night.

Vance said accident reconstruction teams will be working the scene over the next few weeks to determine what led to the tragedy that claimed the life of the boy who had just graduated fifth grade last week.

The accident was the second deadly ATV crash in Connecticut this week. On Monday, 19-year-old Austin Tautkus of Ellington died while riding in Suffield.
