Bear attacks, kills family dog in Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)–A beloved family dog was killed by a ferocious mama bear on Sunday.

Now, neighbors are on alert.

The bear was seen with her three cubs, but unleashed on the pet Husky, who didn’t stand a chance. The dog was attacked outside her home on Duncaster Road in Bloomfield.

The family of the dog says they were going out to pick up their daughter when the let Shelby out to get in the car.

“It happened like that, she came back out and the dog was on the ground broken neck, tongue out, couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t get air to her and we threw her in the truck drove her to the doctor and she died on the way,” said the dog’s owner, Gerry Hodgkiss.

Neighbors had been tracking the mother and her three cubs up and down Duncaster road. They were in the fields and woods on either side of the street.

Police in East Hampton are also reporting bear sightings in the areas of Crescent Street, Main Street and Hills Avenue.

“One of the neighbors saw her put them up in the tree and then rummage through cans,” said Hogkiss.

“I worry about our kids,” he said.

Hodgkiss said he sees the bears 4, 5, 6 times a year. The bears leave him alone and he leaves them alone, he said he knows this was just an accident and he doesn’t want anything to happen to the bear.
