WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– A man was arrested for assaulting an elderly woman after he broke into her West Hartford home, Tuesday afternoon.

She says she was tossed like a rag doll finding a burglar in her home in the middle of the day. Not only did the break-in happen in broad daylight but the woman’s husband was nearby out in the yard.

Tuesday night, police caught the crook.

“I’m mad as hell because he got into my home,” said Estelle, West Hartford. “He walked right by the bathroom door knowing someone was in there. I had the water running and everything, he didn’t care at all that you were home, no he could have cared less.”

It happened in West Hartford in broad daylight right across they street form the mall. Estelle was in the bathroom of her house, her husband outside mowing the lawn when police say 29-year- old Luis Ortiz broke out the back screen and entered.

“I looked to my right and there was this guy standing there with his hands in my husband’s dresser, I said who the hell are you. I turned around and ran and he caught me here in the middle of the stairs and we tangled and he threw me into the table and the wall and all this stuff was down,” said Estelle.

After Estelle called 911, the neighborhood swarmed with police officers. They brought in K-9s and were searching back yards, and side yards and neighbors were glad to see police and they were able to make an arrest.

“This was a very long chase, it went everywhere. We had lots of help and our officers had a lot of help setting up promoters, leap frogging ahead and containing him,” said Lt Stephen Estes, West Hartford PD.

Ortiz was arrested on seven charges including home invasion and assault. As police were tracking Ortiz, the neighborhood watch got together and started going door to door checking on each other making sure everyone was safe.

“The neighbors said lets look at your shed, and see if there is somebody hiding over there, and we went all over the neighborhood talking to each other,” said Nazy Kesbar, West Hartford

Police say Ortiz was a pro, he even brought a back pack with extra clothes so he could change his appearance.

“He changed his clothes as he was running, he pulled them off and running so who I saw him he had a different outfit on,” said Estelle.

Detectives are looking into if he’s responsible for other area burglaries.
