NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Bittersweet best describes the day for team USA. Despite losing 1-0 to Germany, an on goal difference with Portugal was enough to get team USA into the next round.
In a sea of red, white and blue shirts and hats and vests, nobody was ‘rocking’ the patriotic theme better than Danielle Nenova.
“I’m like of course, I’m a fan… of course,” said Nenova.
And her outfit wasn’t the only thing doing the talking.
For Danielle, soccer is clearly more than just a game.
“It’s really about strategic, tactical also its very beautiful to watch, because its very artistic, it’s not only about athleticism, but also the players are extremely intelligent,” said Nenova.
She was just one of the hundreds jamming Pitkin Plaza Thursday afternoon watching the action on four TV’s.
The fact that the game kicked off smack-dab in the middle of the workday didn’t seem to be much of a problem.
A worker at a downtown technology start up said his company even sent out an e-mail saying employees were free to go down to World Cup village to check out the action.
“The office is pretty empty right now. I can see my CEO over there, my COO over there and my sales team inside, there’s at least a dozen of us here,” said Zach Beatty, New Haven.
Although he got the ‘all clear’ from the boss, you have to figure other may have been enjoying let’s just say an extra long lunch hour.
“There might be a couple of call outs, but I had no idea it would go like this, we’re shocked but delighted that soccer is catching fire in the states,” said Damian Cashman, O’toole’s Pub.
So on an afternoon when a German goal got the loudest reaction…
One German fan in the crowd was still able to make his own personal statement.
“There was a group that was heckling me badly, a group of American fans,” said Jason Wright, Fan of Germany. “What the German fans are lacking in presence, we’re making up for in flair.”
All great fun makes you wish they played this World Cup a little more often.
And many of the fans News 8 spoke to plan to be right there at Pitkin Plaza again for Team USA’s next game. That will be Tuesday at four o’clock against the Group H winner.
