NIANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– Despite the wicked weather on the way, ‘DEEP’ is warning about a spike in holiday traffic to local beaches and parks this holiday weekend.
In fact, they’re expecting them to reach capacity and close.
If you think the beach is busy now just wait until this weekend. There most likely won’t even be a patch of sand available on the beach but it’s actually what won’t be available in the parking lots which could close this beach down.
With July Fourth falling on a Friday, the parking lots at Rocky Neck State Park could quickly reach capacity.
“In the eight years I’ve been here yeah usually anytime it’s been on a weekend the park is extremely busy more than usual,” said Gary Jost, Rocky Neck State Park.
Last summer cars were turned away but beach-goers kept coming on foot. At Rocky Neck that means more than a mile walk.
“That’s a hike. We’d have to think about that one. If the weather’s nice enough and we feel like we’re in shape that day we might just do it,” said Michael Rosado, Meriden.
The DEEP is hoping to save folks that long walk by tweeting out any state park closures and posting them on line.
“I did check the website before I came down here today so it’s a good idea,” said Debbie Grant, Vernon. When asked what she would do if it was closed, Rosado said, “make other plans.”
So would Michael Rosado if it was up to him.
When asked if it would save you a nice long walk, Rosado said, “yes although at home I’d have to take a vote and I might just lose that vote.”
For those who do make it in, the folks who run this snack bar and camp store say they’re stacked up.
“Even stakes for their tents,” said Jim Ferguson, MacFerguson’s Express Cantina.
Don’t be fooled by all these empty spots because these lots fill up quickly. In fact last Sunday the beach almost closed because these lots were full. So again call or check ahead.
