Kitchen fire displaces 2 in Niantic

NIANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– A fire that started in a kitchen Sunday nearly destroyed a Niantic home, however the house is not a total loss.

Two people are now displaced after a fire began in the stove area of the kitchen at 27 Brainard Road just before 1 p.m.

Firefighters were able to save the home, even though it is unlivable at this time. There is smoke and water damage throughout home, mostly on the first floor.

According to a family member, no one was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters came from as far as Old Saybrook to fight the blaze. The heat was another challenge for firefighters.

News 8 was told people have stepped up to help the displaced family.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
