NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is meeting with members of Connecticut’s Ukrainian community to discuss this week’s downing of a Malaysian jetliner, shot down over Ukraine.

The Democrat, a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, was scheduled to meet Saturday at St. Michael’s Church in New Haven with a group of local Ukrainians. He was expected to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine following the jetliner crash and gather input from constituents.

U.S. officials believe the Boeing 777 carrying 298 people, including 80 children, likely was downed by an SA-11 missile. Washington “cannot rule out technical assistance from Russian personnel.”

Heavy fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-speaking separatists who seek closer ties with Moscow was reported less than 60 miles from the crash site.
