(WTNH) — Addiction comes in many forms and affects thousands of people across the United States. While there are many movements to prevent the use of drugs, alcohol, or other forms of addiction, it’s still happening in our society.
On Good Morning Connecticut Saturday Gary Mendell, the founder of Shatterproof.org, and Len Wolman, chairman of Waterford Group, talked about their effort to raise awareness about addiction by rappelling down a building.
Gary founded Shatterproof after losing a son to addiction right. He concluded the time was right to form a national organization to reduce the suffering of this disease on the scale of the other national health charities, such as the American Cancer Society. After 15 months of developing a business plan, he funded the organization with $5m and officially launched Shatterproof last year.
Gary approached Len late last year to discuss the possibility of holding an event at one of Waterford’s hotels in Hartford. Waterford Group Charitable Foundation and Shatterproof decided to partner on this Hartford event together.
The event will be held Tuesday, July 29th. at the Hilton on Trumbull St. in Hartford, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Shatterproof is a national organization committed to protecting children from developing addiction to alcohol or other drugs and ending the stigma and suffering of those affected by this disease. In the U.S. alone, addiction to alcohol and other drugs claims more than 135,000 lives every year – 370 people every day, 15 every hour. A well-funded, large-scale movement can alter the course of this disease and save countless lives. It has worked for cancer, heart disease and diabetes. And it can work for addiction by bridging serious gaps in funding and resources.
Waterford Group Charitable Foundation is a registered 501c3 nonprofit, which supports the communities in which their associates live and work. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life of others through monetary and gift-in-kind donations, as well as volunteering at various events. Waterford associates donate to the Foundation through voluntary payroll contributions, as well as participate in numerous fundraising events each year. This allows the Waterford Group Charitable Foundation to support many charitable causes, both on a national and regional level.
