SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)– A moose was killed by a tractor trailer truck on I-84 in Southington on Sunday morning.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says a small female moose was struck by a tractor trailer truck around 4:30 a.m. on I-84 eastbound between exits 31 in Bristol and 32 in Southington. It is unknown if the driver suffered any injuries.

On Saturday, there were reports of a moose sighting near the Cheshire/ Waterbury line along I-84, as well as other reports of a moose in the area throughout the past few weeks. It is unknown whether that is the same moose that was killed.

DEEP says this is the first moose they are aware of that has been killed on state roadway this year. While DEEP makes an effort to donate remains of animals to Hunters for the Hungry or organizations that help feed people in need, they say it was not possible in this case. The moose was removed by a state DOT crew from the road.
