Gas leak affects ECSU campus, homes evacuated

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) — Firefighters in Willimantic are dealing with a gas leak in town that has affected part of the Eastern Connecticut State University campus and a residential area.

It’s happening on Windham Street extension, where six homes have been evacuated.

In a message posted on Twitter the Willimantic Fire Department said “3/4" Natural gas line leak on Windham Street extension. Evacuation South end of ECSU campus and area neighborhoods.”

Crews were in the area installing street lights when the natural gas line was struck around 11:30 a.m.

The fire department has asked Connecticut Light & Power crews to cut power to the South end of campus.

It’s unclear how many people are on campus and had to be evacuated. There is no estimate on when the leak will be contained.
