NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Serving up some “franks” for dinner tonight? It’s National Hot Dog Day.

Loyal customers have been stopping at Jimmy Nigretti’s hot dog stand — across the New Haven Green — for ten years now. The top selling topping for one of America’s iconic foods? His way –with brown mustard, cooked onions, chili and cheese– nice and neat.

“You can eat them but you can’t eat them every day. But you make sure you have one today,” he said. News 8 also asked one customer what he loved about hotdogs. “I don’t know, I really don’t know. It’s just that they’re the national past time and the national food almost like pizza. And they taste good? oh yeah, especially these.”

And we came across this from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council: hot dogs are eaten most often between Memorial Day and Labor Day — with more than 20 billion consumed a year.
