STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A 31-year-old Stonington man has been charged with cruelty to animals after police say he shot his girlfriend’s pet turtle.

Police tell The Day of New London that Steven Richard used a BB gun to shoot the turtle in the head Friday night outside a home on Pawtucket Avenue.

Police responded to the home just after 8 p.m. when a neighbor reported an argument between Richard and the woman who lives there.

Police say Richard did not explain why he shot the pet. A phone listed for Richard had been disconnected Monday. A police dispatcher said he was unsure of the turtle’s fate.

Richard was released on a promise to appear in New London Superior Court on Aug. 4.
