New Britain alderman steps down after drunken tirade at mayor


NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Alderman Michael Trueworthy is stepping down as Mayor Pro-Tempore after an confronting Mayor Erin Stewart while under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police report, the incident happened July 22nd. Mayor Stewart said Trueworthy first called her with slurred and belligerent speech, then showed up at city hall banging on her office door demanding to be let in.

Stewart told police once inside, he started calling her vulgar names and demanded a drink.

Trueworthy said he’s been struggling with alcoholism for a long time. “I drank and I should not have,” he said. He added that since the incident he has attended an AA meeting is getting help for his alcohol dependence.

He says he reached out to Mayor Stewart to apologize for the incident, but she hasn’t returned his calls.
