Conn.’s WW II vet to receive medals 70 years later

NOANK, Conn. (AP) — The wait is almost over for a World War II veteran living in Connecticut who is yet to receive eight military medals service he rendered nearly 70 years ago.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney is scheduled to present the service medals to Marty Schames during a ceremony scheduled for Monday morning in Noank.

Schames entered active duty on May of 1941 in New York as an airplane maintenance technician in the 15th Bomb Squadron. He served in Tunisia, Italy, southern France and Japan, and completed active duty in November 1945.

Honors that Schames will receive include the Legion of Merit, Cod Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Silver Service Star, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and the Marksmanship Badge with Carbine Bar.
