NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A 71-year-old New Haven man is facing charges accused of shooting and critically injuring a neighbor in their apartment complex.

It happened at 25 Donna Drive early Sunday morning. Anthony Anamasi is accused of shooting 23-year-old Leroy Brown in the side of the head. Police say Anamasi is the one who called 9-1-1 and that he told police he had shot a man who tried to attack him with a knife.

People News 8 talked with say Anamasi is known as a leader in the community.

“He is nice. He’s out here always speaking always saying hi to everybody and helping cleaning up the neighborhoods,” said Lisa Bradshaw, a neighbor. “Very surprised, very surprised, you’re living fine one day then the next minute something like this happens, it will put fear in your heart.”

Brown remains in critical condition at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Anamasi was originally only taken into custody for questioning but is now facing assault charges. He does have a valid gun permit issued in Connecticut and the gun was properly registered to him. The police department has possession of the gun suspected to have been involved in this crime.
