MONTVILLE, Conn. (WTNH) — It wasn’t a one-armed bandit that took the cash from someone who came to the Mohegan Sun casino. Police say it was a bus driver.
The charter bus from Massachusetts is one of many that come to Mohegan Sun each day but one driver may have taken advantage of the high stakes fun one passenger was planning to have. Mohegan Tribal Police say Zhi Hong Pang stole a wallet which was on the counter at the Players Development Desk in the Earth casino. That wallet contained $3,100 dollars in cash.
Norwich resident Henry Lemoi says, “It’s a sad state of affairs. A person gets on a bus of course and they expect to be safe and certainly not to have the bus driver, who’s like the captain of the ship so to speak, steal from them. That’s unfortunate.”
Stephanie Hernandez, of Groton, says, “I think it would make me nervous. I don’t really understand why they would do that.”
The wallet and money were later located on the bus and the 52-year old driver from Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested. Under an agreement reached between the Mohegan tribe and the state in May, state police are no longer needed to make arrests like this. Mohegan Tribal Police have taken over policing the casino and reservation.
“In the casino you can’t get away with much. The cameras are everywhere. All those little balls in the sky, they don’t miss much,” says Lemoi.
Hernandez adds, “It’s disappointing. Makes me like really nervous. Also, do they check the people who work for the buses? Background checks or something?”
The bus company has not been identified. The driver will be back in Connecticut next week. He’s due in Norwich Superior Court to face the larceny charge on Thursday.
