Motorcyclist critical after firetruck collision

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) –- A motorcyclist is in critical condition after hitting a fire truck Thursday.

It happened at the intersection of James and Woolsey Streets. Police said the fire engine was responding to an emergency call when the motorcycle driver, 53-year-old Casper Amodio Junior of West Haven, collided with the truck.

Officer David Hartman of the New Haven Police Department said, “The fire engine was responding to a medical emergency, with its lights and siren activated, the fire engine began its left turn onto Woolsey Street, and by their accounts, never even saw the motorcycle coming.”

The firefighters did jump out and give the motorcyclist first aid until an ambulance got there. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police say he wasn’t wearing a helmet. They are investigating to see if speed was a factor.
