Motorcyclist dead after crashing on Route 25

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — A motorcyclist was fatally injured when he was ejected late Friday, as he tried to pass a car using the shoulder of Route 25, state police said.

Joel Cotto, 26, of Wake Street, Bridgeport, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

About 10:45 p.m., Cotto was headed north “at a high rate of speed” in the right lane of Route 25, near exit 2, when he tried to use the shoulder to pass a Chevrolet pickup truck in front of him, state police said. But the cyclist hit the side of the truck and lost control, and then hit the guardrail, police said. He was thrown “several hundred feet,” landing on the right shoulder of Route 25, they added.

The driver of the truck, Courtney A. Cuff, of New Jersey, was not injured, according to police. She pulled over after the accident.

Cotto was wearing a helmet, police added. The crash remains under investigation.
