Fatal crash shut down I-84E in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — One person was killed in the car crash that shut down I-84 Eastbound in West Hartford this morning. The highway has since reopened.

State Police say the accident happened sometime around 3:40 AM. The vehicle was traveling eastbound in the left lane between the exit 41 on ramp and the Mayflower Street overpass when the driver lost control and the car went off the road and into the grassy median. The car then traveled east in the median between the concrete overpass supports and the metal beam guardrail off the left lane, causing the car to roll over.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt and thrown from the car into the left lane. He was taken to St. Francis hospital by ambulance where he later died of his injuries. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

The entrance ramp to I-84 by exit 41 was closed, off as well as the three lanes between exits 43-44 near the accident.

As of 6:30 AM, a dark colored sedan was towed away from the highway. The highway has been cleared.
