Marijuana dispensary advancing

MONTVILLE, Conn. (WTNH) — Thames Valley Alternative Relief is not only a brand-new business in Montville. It’s also part of a brand-new industry in the state.

Owner and pharmacist Laurie Zrenda explains how the process for patients will work: “They’ll have their medical marijuana card so they’ll come in.”

This is one of only six dispensaries in the state. Patients have to be registered with one of them. Zrenda says, “They’ll have a technician or a pharmacist walk them through the process. We have a consultation area if they want to talk privately about their health conditions.”

She says there are misconceptions about medical marijuana. The drug will come from one of four licensed growers. It will be ground or an oil to be smoked or used in one of these vaporizers. “The marijuana can’t be consumed in a public place, or on public transportation, or on any school grounds, or even in the presence of someone under the age of 18. So when they purchase it here they’re not using it here, they’re not using it in our parking lot, they have to take it home,” says Zrenda.

Her staff will determine the dose and strain based on the patient’s need and that information will be sent in for study. It is uncharted territory with strict state guidelines as far as who can get the medical marijuana and how it can be dispensed.

Zrenda says, “These are also seriously ill people who are looking for some other way of handling their pain or their muscles spasms or their Crohn’s disease whatever the case may be.”

Surveillance cameras and a huge safe are just part of an extensive security system.

Construction is almost complete. One of the last pieces to be installed is a bullet proof window at the reception area because security is a high priority.
