Trooper charged with DUI, crash

ELLINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — A state trooper is accused of hitting a pickup truck with his cruiser and flipping over while intoxicated Friday night, police confirmed Satruday.

Trooper Christopher J. Powers, 42, is charged with DUI and failure to drive right in the accident, which took place at 7:40 p.m. Friday. He was “stripped of his duties,” and placed on administrative duty, Lt. J. Paul Vance, state police spokesman, said Saturday. Powers was not on duty at the time of the crash.

Powers was driving west in a 2013 Interceptor on Sandy Beach Road (Route 140), near Jacobs Hill Road when he crossed into the oncoming lane, hit a Dodge Ram pick-up truck and flipped the cruiser, state police said. He was treated at Rockville General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and a passenger in the truck, Deborah Walker, 49, of Jacobs Hill Road, Ellington, was treated at Johnson Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Powers failed field sobriety tests, state police said. He was released on $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Aug. 25.
