NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A day ago the neighborhood at the corner of Strong and Valley Streets was filled with jubilation but now it’s a scene of mourning.
Early Sunday morning a man named Darryl McNair had just wrapped up celebrating his 58th birthday and was sitting in front of his computer inside his home, when then the unthinkable happened, he was struck by round of gunfire that went through the wall, resulting in injures that took his life.
McNair’s stepdaughter, Chandra Costin, lives next door, the memories of what had happened are still fresh in her mind.
“Heard the shots, I heard them then I saw the guy run out here jump into the car and hall boogy up the street,” said Costin.
New Haven Police say its still early in their investigation but evidence suggests McNair wasn’t the target, rather was just an innocent bystander. But what hurts the most says McNair’s step daughter is that whoever pulled the trigger didn’t just discharge a bullet, they took away someone who was deeply loved.
“They took a soul, they took a life, he had many years to go,” said Costin.
