BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH)– A one-year old child has died after being stabbed in her stomach, according to police. The incident happened on Park Street in Bristol.

Bristol Police have taken the victim’s uncle, 36 year-old Arthur Hapgood into custody. He has been charged with Murder with Special Circumstances (victim under 16 years of age), Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree and Risk of Injury to a Minor. The last two charges stem from the fact that an 11 year old child was present during the incident, but was not injured. Hapgood is being held on a 1.5 million dollar bond and will appear in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday, 8/19/14.

Police also said that the mother was not home at the time of the stabbing.

The baby, who has been identified as Zaniyah Calloway,  was first transported by Bristol EMS to Bristol Hospital with a severe laceration to her midsection. LifeStar then transported the baby to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where she was pronounced dead.

During the investigation it was learned that Hapgood was babysitting Zaniyah at the time of the incident. Police are trying to figure out a motive for this crime.

It was a loud and rowdy scene, as neighbors said they heard the shouts coming from the house, and they went out to look.

“Somebody was holding the child, and it was just lots of chaos. You could just hear everybody screaming, ‘Call the ambulance!’ ‘Call the parents!’ It was just really, really worrying,” one neighbor said.

“The suspect came out, complied with all of our orders, he was taken into custody,” said Lieutenant Kevin Morrell of the Bristol Police Department.

A detective on the scene also said Hapgood was naked when he was arrested and it appears his injuries were self-inflicted, possibly accidental.
