Victim’s stepson speaks after New Haven man killed in own home with stray bullet

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)–More details surrounding the shooting death of New Haven resident Daryl McNair have emerged in recent days, as the 58-year old was killed by a stray bullet right in his own home.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning on Valley Street, which is not far from Whalley Avenue.

Through tears, McNair’s step son Martis Costin recalls the final few moments he had with his stepfather.

“I said pops, don’t move, because you don’t know where the bullet is going to go,” Costin said. “My mother was saying, I love you, I love you, and the last touch of my father is when he put his arm around me, and that was it,” Costin said.

Costin said McNair was playing “Solitaire” at his computer after celebrating his birthday on Sunday, when around 2 a.m. the family heard multiple gunshots outside of their Strong Street home.

“The projectile just came through the door, and hit him in the back,” Costin said. “When I came down, my mother and my father were right here laying.”

“It’s senseless. There’s no need for it,” he said.

Now his mother and sister sort through pictures for his funeral.

“The community needs to step up and do something about this, or this is going to continue to happen,” Costin said.

Police are still searching for the suspect.
