Suspect in court after allegedly stabbing baby

BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH) — Tonight a mother places a single pink bear at the base of the door where 1-year-old Zaniyah Calloway was allegedly stabbed to death by her uncle.

“I am so very upset about it,” one mourner said.

It happened last night on Park Street in Bristol. Today 36-year-old Arthur Hapgood went before a judge for murder. Police say he has confessed and family packed the court all wanting to know how and why.

Juan Negrone said. “My niece, an angel. What happened? She’s a baby. She was just a baby.” Witnesses say one possible explanation is drugs. Police say Hapgood admitted to taking drugs last night and was found naked on his front porch when he was arrested.

Hapgood has an extensive criminal history going back to 1995, and he’s currently on probation.

His past convictions include:

- Possession with Intent to Sell

- Interfering with an Officer

- Robbery

- Larceny and Violation of Probation

One witness said, “He was in a happy mood when he outside playing with the kids.”

Amber Collins said, “He seemed fine. He was playing kickball with all the kids. I didn’t see him as a threat.”

But witnesses say Hapgood snapped after an argument with his wife, grabbed a knife and went after the baby. Court documents say an 11-year-old girl picked up the baby and tried to run. But he allegedly stabbed the baby in her arms. Collins said a neighbor grabbed a towel to cover the baby and kept the child elevated.

The baby’s mother did not want to talk, but she did post on her Facebook page saying. “Rest in peace baby girl you will truly be missed. Justice will be served. I love you more than words can express – Rock the heavens.”
