Medical marijuana cardholders flock to new dispensary

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) — The state’s newest medical marijuana dispensary, Prime Wellness of Connecticut, had its grand opening Wednesday night. The South Windsor location joins five other locations across the state already doing business.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew a large crowd who came to see what Prime Wellness had to offer. At the dispensary facility at 75 John Fitch Blvd., you will be able to buy a variety of pot as long as you have a medical marijuana card. The merchandise includes water pipes, vapor machines and the kind that you just need a lighter to enjoy.

“I’m just glad that it is finally here and it is opening up,” said cardholder Jodi DeFord. “I was in Colorado. You know we’re moving up. We’re moving forward.”

“I’m glad that it is no longer going to be an illegal situation for me,” said Sally Cummings, whose husband is a cardholder.

In order to qualify for a medical marijuana card in Connecticut, you must suffer from one of 11 debilitating illnesses and your doctor needs to believe that marijuana treatment is appropriate.

Connecticut’s medical marijuana program is known as the Pharmaceutical Medical Model, which uses actual licensed pharmacists to dispense the pot.

Officials with Prime Wellness say they will be officially open and able to dispense pot sometime next month. From the turnout Wednesday, they are expected to be pretty busy.
