WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — An apparent drifter is under arrest after he threatened a clerk at a West Haven hotel.

Police responded to the Hampton Inn around 5:45p.m. yesterday, after the manager called to report an attempted robbery. Police say a male came into the lobby, asked the clerk for a pencil and a piece of paper, and then wrote a threatening note that said “Give me the money or I’ll kill you”.

According to officials, the clerk apparently didn’t take the suspect seriously and did not give him any money. The suspect then told the clerk he was going to shoot him, and suddenly ran out of the building.

Police later fond the suspect down the street on Allings Crossing Road. He has been identified as Michael Ewing, an apparent drifter, who at first claimed to be from Mississippi, and then claimed he lived in this state.

Upon investigation, police found Ewing had an extensive out of state criminal history including abuse and possession of crack cocaine.

He was charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Robbery in the Second Degree. He is being held on $100,000. bond.
