Police: Ansonia man started pursuit; had cocaine, gun

SHELTON, Conn., (WTNH) – An Ansonia man who allegedly refused to stop for police was arrested after crashing into a Route 8 guardrail near exit 11 and running into the Shelton Square Shopping Center.

Kelvin Whitehurst, 27, of Fifth Street, Ansonia, is charged in a warrant with interfering with a police officer, assaulting a police officer, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol, weapons in a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm and escape from custody.

Police said after crashing, Whitehurst ran to Burger King on Bridgeport Avenue, where he was detained.

Ansonia police said they found several cell phones and cocaine in the car. Whitehurst was also wanted for an Aug. 14 foot chase in which he discarded an allegedly stolen firearm and scuffled with an officer, police said.

Whitehurst was also charged in the Shelton incident with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, interfering with police, driving under suspension, failure to obey an officer’s command, engaging in pursuit and evading responsibility.

His bond was set at $350,000 for an appearance in Derby Superior Court.
