Mother accused of getting drunk, leaving 2-year old in car

BRISTOL, Conn. (WTNH)–22-year old mother Kelsey James is accused of being so drunk that police said she didn’t know where she was as her child slept in her car in the parking lot of a bar.

Police said they were called to City Sports Grill and Spare Time in Bristol just before midnight on Friday.

“Apparently she was by herself at the time she was at the bar as far as we can tell,” said Bristol Police’s Lt. Donn Watson. “It was determined she couldn’t drive. She appeared to have difficulty walking.”

Spare Time employees told News 8 they were instructed not to talk to the media, but said she was already drunk when she arrived; they tried to give her a glass of water, and called police.

Police said they brought her to the hospital and when she started to sober up 5 hours later she was asking about her daughter.

Lt. Watson said, “The nurse discovered she was asking for her child…the whereabouts of her child.” Police came back to the bar and found her 2-year-old-little girl nestled in the backseat. “She was asleep. She seemed fine, but she was still taken to the hospital to be evaluated,” he said.

The toddler is now in the care of the Department of Children and Families. Police said not only did they find the toddler in the car, but empty liquor and beer bottles too.

News 8 tried to call James and went by her home to get her side of the story. No one answered. One of her friends on Facebook who did not want to be named said, “She is a great young, single dedicated, mother that loves her daughter more than anything in her world and never let anything happen to her.”

Bristol police said they’ve had more reports of children being left in cars this summer, but they don’t know if it’s happening more or if more people are reporting it.

“Crazy just crazy, it’s ridiculous,” said Terryville mother, Lori Mantoni. She continued, “I have children of my own. How can you forget your kid in the car? To go out drinking with your kid in the car is even worse.”

Bristol’s Paul Levoi said, “I don’t understand. I don’t understand how you can leave a child in a car.”

James is out on a $50,000 bond. She’s been charged with risk of Injury to a minor and is due in court on September 2nd.
