HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)–An elderly Hamden woman was attacked by a raccoon inside her own home, police said on Monday.
An 88-year old woman told police she was letting her cat inside when a raccoon followed, The woman didn’t notice the raccoon had come in, and when she attempted to pet it, thinking it was her cat, the raccoon attacked her. It bit the woman on the elbow, hand, forearm, lip and chin.
Upon the arrival of police, the raccoon charged at two officers. Hamden police euthanized the raccoon before it could do any further damage. The Hamden Animal Control Division has transported the raccoon to the Connecticut Public Health Laboratory for rabies testing.
The woman was treated and has been released from Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The state health department said rabies tests take 24 to 48 hours to process, so results will not be in at least until Tuesday.
