HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A frightening discovery of guns at a community center playground has parents panicked.
There’s a daycare on that property and Tuesday night parents are upset telling News 8, those guns could have gotten into the hands of little kids. Kids or no kids, a lot of people in that neighborhood are panicked. These two guns were found while Hamden police were working what they call a crime suppression detail on Sunday.
Tuesday night, people in that area of Dixwell Ave are hoping police keep a close eye on who hangs around the Keefe Center playground. Police finding two guns on this playground is not what parents wanted to hear.
“What if a kid picked it up. So many what ifs. It just needs to be taken care of,” said Mishonda Harper, a parent.
Just recently, Mishonda Harper’s four-year-old went to daycare at the Keefe Center off of Dixwell Avenue, along with many other area children. A few years ago, her daughter went there. Still, on occasion they come play there.
“There has to be something done. The safety of our children is at stake which is definitely a concern,” said Harper.
People who live in the neighborhood were worried as their kids and grand-kids like to walk right across the street to play.
But the statement “police found two guns” is making Margaret Jasinka think twice about bringing her four-year-old granddaughter there.
“If there’s not a lock on it or anything they could’ve been badly hurt,” said Jasinka.
Hamden police didn’t say if those guns were loaded. They did say that earlier on Sunday they arrested a convicted felon as part of a push to keep crime down in the neighborhood. They say 24-year-old Russell Gillian of New Haven had a fully loaded gun under the hood of his car.
Jasinka says the good news is three guns were taken off the street but…
“We should have more cops walking the beat,” said Jasinka.
Other parents say that’s not the answer.
When asked if she sees a lot of police, Karen Chen said, “I do. I do. Every night after 7.” When asked if her kids go down there, she said, “yeah with friends.”
Not anymore after this. At least not alone. Police are still looking for who placed those guns in the area of the Keefe Center playground. If you know anything call Hamden police.
