STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Police are investigating after a taxi driver was stabbed to death in North Stamford. His body was found inside his cab at the end of Dolittle Road. Investigators are now trying to figure out if it was a robbery gone wrong.
Fire crews cleaned up the scene as police search for the person who killed Stamford Taxi driver 47-year-old Mohamed Kamal.
“I actually saw him like two days ago, so it’s a surprise,” said Fazel Karim, a friend.
Karim says Kamal’s wife was worried when he never came home from driving his cab. She called police saying he was missing around 7 Wednesday morning.
“He’s a very hardworking man. So, he has little kids you know?” said Karim.
A landscaper came to work and called police at 8 Wednesday morning. He found Kamal with….
“Up to 15 to 20 stab wounds, very violent death, looked like there was a struggle because he had defensive wounds on his hands which lead us to believe he was fighting for his life,” said Lt. Diedrich Hohn, Stamford.
Police say he was pronounced dead on scene. They seized the cab as evidence.
“Obviously we’re going through all his taxi logs and phone records and everything that lead hm to go up there. It’s kind of a desolate area of Stamford,” said Hohn.
He says detectives don’t know if it was a customer turned murderer or if Kamal knew the suspect. But they think the suspect knew Doolittle Road.
“Someone must know the area. Just to lure someone down there or to have him drop him off down there. It’s got to be someone familiar with the area,” said Hohn.
Friends don’t know why he would be targeted.
“He’s a very friendly guy and family man,” said Karim.
