WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– A West Haven man is facing charges after police say he chased his girlfriend with an axe.

It happened on Church Street around 11:20a.m. Thursday. Police responded to a call of a man chasing a female with an axe. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Peter Phaneuf with an axe in his hand, walking towars the front door.

Police say Phaneuf and his girlfriend and another man got in an argument over money. Police say all three were drunk. The woman told police the argument started because Phaneuf accused her of stealing money and in turn, Phaneuf allegedly swung the axe at her, threatening to kill her.

The second male also made the same accusation. Phaneuf was arrested and is being held on bond.
