OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) – An estimated 13 hand guns and 3 or 4 high powered rifles were stolen earlier this week from the Grouse Perch gun store. But its who allegedly took the weapons that has some in this community in disbelief.
So far police think there are at least two men responsible for the crime, 25-year-old Thomas Russo, arrested Thursday, and 25-year-old John Thomas Randall, arrested Saturday. Both Russo and Randall are neighbors who grew up together on Fenwood Drive.
“I just now that they were the very best of friends through grade school and high school and always were wonderful to me,” said family friend, Kerin Anderson. “Even when they went to college and they came back it was always a hug.”
Police think the men had planned to sell the firearms and then turn around and use that money to buy drugs. Russo was charged by police with burglary, larceny, theft of a fire arm, and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Randall, believed to be his partner in crime, is now facing charges of interfering with an investigation and operating drug factory
“We think more arrests are forthcoming whether there are additional charges for the people that we’ve already arrested or other people so the investigation again is still very active,” said Chief of Police, Michael Spera.
Randall is being held on $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear before a judge on September 2nd.
