NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The NCAA says UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma broke the rules when he called to congratulate a Philadelphia girl who was one of the Little League World Series.
12-year-old Mo’Ne Davis was getting a great deal of media attention for her success as a Little League pitcher against the boys. She mentioned her favorite sport is basketball and that she wanted to play for UConn. Auriemma called her and congratulated her. Davis is from Philadelphia, as is Auriemma.
A coach from the American Athletic Conference reportedly complained that Auriemma calling Davis was a rules violation. The NCAA agreed, calling it a secondary rules violation.
As you can imagine, nobody at UConn is happy about all of this. “Coach Auriemma checked with the UConn compliance department and was advised such a call would be permissible since Davis is not considered a prospective student-athlete by the NCAA,” Athletic Director Warde Manuel said in a statement.
Manuel said UConn accepts the penalty, which is essentially a little more than a slap on the wrist, but still doesn’t agree with it.
