BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — A mother and her child are in critical condition after a Sunday morning fire in Bridgeport.
Neighbors gathered outside the apartment building on Washington Ave. Sunday evening to put up a sign expressing well wishes for a family impacted by a fire that happened there earlier in the day.
“All I heard was just screaming and yelling and everything,” said neighbor, Terrance Hunt.
The flames broke out around 12:30 a.m. and firefighters say there was a family was trapped inside when their trucks rolled up.
“When the first firefighters arrived on scene there was a gentlemen out front who we had taken to possibly be the father who reported that his wife and two year old child were still inside the apartment,” said Christopher Martin, Assistant Fire Chief.
It was a situation those who saw the fire unfolded could hardly believe what was happening.
“It was terrible it was terrible,” said Fatima Reyes, who lives bellow the unit that burned.
Reyes’s apartment was partially damaged due to water leaking from up above but she says what is troubling her the most is that her 2 year old god daughter Alianna, and Alianna’s mother Marisol are fighting for their lives after they each had to be pulled by firefighters a window to safety.
“Its very sad,” said Reyes.
Both the mother and her daughter are in critical condition.
First responders say two elderly people also had to be brought to safety as a result of the fire.
