EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)–An 18 year old was arrested today after her baby was found dead in a dumpster in East Hartford. The body of that newborn boy was found back in August. And today, police took that woman to jail, charging her with the baby’s death.
Police have arrested 18 year old Geralyz Sotomayor Cruz for manslaughter, risk of injury to a minor, and concealment of a delivery after police say they found her new born baby in the trash last August.
“That’s just crazy, you would never think someone would throw a kid in the trash,” said East Hartford native Steven Burns.
“The father came running to say there is a baby in the trash can, and I was surprised. I watched the whole thing for at least an hour and a half,” said Anthony Colenzo.
Police have been investigating the death and disposal of the baby for the last two months, they have been working with the medical examiner to figure out what happened, But what has neighbors scratching their heads, the mother was also charged with first degree assault.
“I saw police and when I found out it was a baby, thrown in the trash can I told my family and it was crazy no kid should ever deserve that,” Burns said.
Police say they were originally tipped off by doctors at CCMC, they said they had an 18 year old there who had delivered a baby but had no baby, so police came here to do a welfare check and when they searched inside the trash can that is when they found a baby boy. Neighbors say they are shocked, one man said he was disgusted because they have the new safe haven laws where you can bring your baby to the hospital no questions asked.
“You don’t kill a baby, if you don’t want what it give it to the hospital sign away your rights to the hospital, and they have the new law, just sign the baby away,” Colenzo said.
