MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH)–Meriden police have arrested a man they say climbed through a window and sexually assaulted a 10-year old girl. Jose Gonzalez, 23, of Waterbury, was charged with home invasion, first degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a child, unlawful restraint and threatening. He was held on $1 million bond and is due in court October 20.
Gonzalez also has an outstanding warrant for Escape from the Connecticut Department of Correction, Division of Parole. Gonzalez ran from the police when he was confronted in Waterbury. Once apprehended, he was in possession of several bundles of heroin.
The incident was a little girl’s nightmare and a mother’s pain. News 8 spoke to the Meriden mother whose little girl was sexually assaulted by an intruder.
“It’s hard you know. You don’t even feel safe now going to sleep,” the mother said. “Last night I was checking every window like ten times and I already had checked it even though police were outside and I was still checking it. I don’t feel safe.”
She hasn’t felt safe since 3:30 early Wednesday morning when a man reportedly broke into her ten year old daughter’s bedroom and sexually assaulted her.
While she is somewhat confused by what happened only knowing a man came in and hurt her, her mother tells News 8, “I feel more devastated because I know I was up and I didn’t hear nothing because my AC was on.”
News 8 is not identifying the mother or her daughter, who live in the Pratt Street, Center Street area of Meriden where other parents and children are now on alert.
“It is scary,” said Destiny Tolentino, who lives nearby. “I don’t play outside anymore because of those kinds of things.”
The victim’s mother says the man broke into the apartment through an open bedroom window and then went down the hall to the little girl’s room. He threatened to kill the girl and her family if she told but she did tell her mother.
“He was still peeping through the front window when I saw him I cursed at him he ran through the back and I run him through the back door and he cut through the bakery,” says her mother.
The little girl also told her mother he smelled like booze and garbage. Her mom says, “I thank god that he didn’t take her out the window or killed her and took her somewhere else did worse things to her.”
