Inmate death at Northern Correction Institution under investigation

SOMERS, Conn. (WTNH)- The Connecticut Department of Correction and State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Northern Correction Institution in Somers.

The inmate, 27-year-old Sonny Rivera, was found unresponsive in his cell at 7:41 a.m. on Friday October 17, 2014. According to the DOC, correctional and medical staff initiated emergency and life saving measures. He was then taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m.

Rivera was serving a 4 1/2 year sentence for assault, second degree; he had been incarcerated since February 21, 2012.

The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
