HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Hamden police are investigating after a man was shot and killed on Circular Avenue Sunday. What exactly led up to the gunfire is still under investigation but authorities say it all began with an argument of some sort.
Police have released more information about what happened Sunday in the shooting that took the life of 56-year-old Larry Dildy, but when it comes to who did it and why, and where that suspect might be now, we still don’t have many details.
Original Story: Hamden police investigate homicide
It was around 12:30 Sunday afternoon when Hamden police got the call about a disturbance at an apartment on Circular Avenue. What police told News 8 is that an unknown white male knocked on the apartment door, and when Dildy answered, the man either forced his way inside, or Dildy invited him inside. The two then had some kind of verbal dispute, which became a physical dispute, and ended with the man shooting Dildy. Police say this caused massive internal injuries.
Dildy later died at Yale New Haven Hospital. A female relative did try to help Dildy. She hit the gunman with a broomstick and that was apparently enough to make him leave. She was not hurt.
Police are still looking into whether Dildy knew the man who killed him.
“We’re not sure if the suspect was invited into the home, he did knock on the door. Mr Dildy answered the door, and whether he let him in or not at this point we’re not certain,” said Capt. Ronald Smith, Hamden Police Dept.
As for motive, police still don’t have one. They say Dildy, the victim, was arrested on a drug charge about 5 years ago, so they are looking into whether this may have been drug related.
There has been a string of home invasion robberies in the Hamden area recently, but police say they have a suspect in those, and that suspect is already in jail for something else, so they do not think this shooting is related.
