Hartford firefighter accidentally shoots man in head

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – A Hartford firefighter accidentally shot a man in the head early Sunday morning and has been placed on administrative leave.

Police responded to a shooting on 86 Webster Street around 12:15 a.m., where they had found a male who had been accidentally shot in the head.

The victim was identified as Jose Medina, 28, of Hartford. Medina was transported to Hartford Hospital where he is in stable condition. His injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Medina was shot in the left cheek and the same bullet hit his jaw and broke it. The bullet got lodged in the back of his neck.

Police said Justin Wood, 25, of East Hartford was showing Medina the handgun when it accidentally discharged. Wood has been a Hartford firefighter since December 2, 2012.

There are no charges at this time or arrests at this time. The Major Crimes Division is investigating the shooting.
