Treats for Troops

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – We all know that kids get way more candy than they can possibly eat on Halloween.

So what do you do with all of it? You don’t want to throw it out. Why not send it to our troops overseas?

Kool Smiles, a leading provider of quality dental care in Connecticut, is coordinating for the third year, “Operation Troop Treats” to encourage children to bring their Halloween candy to the New Haven and Hartford County Kool Smiles dental offices in exchange for a toy. The candy will then be sent in care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas via Operation Gratitude. Kool Smiles initiated the program in 2012 to help raise awareness about good dental hygiene and uplift American armed forces serving overseas.

In 2013, children and families donated more than two tons of candy for the troops through Operation Troop Treats. Kool Smiles is encouraging area families to exceed last year’s contribution.
Every child that donates at a Kool Smiles office will receive one toy for every 25 pieces of unopened candy in its original intended packaging. There is a limit of 3 toys per child and toys will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

In addition to the candy collected and the additional toys, Kool Smiles is donating 100 dental care packages for troops, as well as the funds to cover the assembly and shipment of 200 care packages.
