SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)– A teacher in Southington was yanked out of class after what the school is calling “unprofessional behavior.” That Southington High School teacher was reportedly drunk in the classroom and hauled out in handcuffs, but not by police.
ORIGNIAL STORY: Southington teacher removed from the classroom
The incident happened Thursday, according to school officials, during the first and second period classes. The principal of Southington High School sent out a letter to parents saying a teacher “Behaved in an unprofessional manner… and was removed immediately from the classroom.”
An insider in the school says it was more than inappropriate behavior.
“They said he was a Spanish teacher who came into school fairly intoxicated to the point where he soiled himself. He wet himself,” said a person who wished to remain anonymous. “The kids were video taping it and he preceded to pin a student up against the wall. He did make physical contact with a student.”
Friday, we stopped by the Board of Education to see if they would confirm what our sources tell us about the allegedly drunken teacher and what they intend to do about it, since Southington police say they were never called.
Assistant superintendent Karen Smith would not confirm any information regarding the allegedly drunken state of the Spanish teacher, nor would she explain why the police were never called.
We asked if there was protocol in place for people being intoxicated while on school property.
“Oh absolutely, we have board protocols and procedures that are always followed 100-percent, whether it be staff members, students, or even community members, we have a very strict policy that is always followed,” said Smith.
However, Southington police say no incident report was filed.
Parents complained that the letter regarding the incident and the teacher’s allegedly drunken behavior wasn’t detailed enough. They say the school is trying to sweep the incident under the rug.
“If a teacher is being escorted out the school and my child is in that classroom or school I definitely want to know that,” said one parent of a Southington High School student. “You know, it’s disturbing because you don’t know what the teacher did, you don’t know if the teacher could harm the kids.”
The assistant superintendent wouldn’t say what will happen to that teacher from here, only that they are investigating.
