“Singin’ In the Rain” by Sacred Heart Academy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A local school performance hits the big stage of the Shubert Theatre while also inspiring kids to help others.
“Singin’ in the Rain”, a favorite for many theater goers will be performed by Sacred Heart Academy next weekend. Some of the cast joined News 8’s Brian Spyros live on set with a preview of the performance.

Why did you choose SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN?
It’s a weather thing. As we closed last year’s production of ANNIE, I was inspired by the optimism of our students- truly believing the sun will come out, even when it doesn’t seem possible. Their spirit and their enthusiam for the future is so reaffirming- they truly sing in the rain, with hopes of a better tomorrow. We always choose a musical that reflects our core values, and SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is perfect.

I understand the SHA musical always inspires service projects. Is that true this year?
Yes, our students love giving back and this year they were inspired by the central theme of SINGIN IN THE RAIN which is embracing technology to improve lives- so they identified and acknowledged several members of our community who do that every day – the American School for the Deaf Faculty, the CT Department for the Blind and even the tech departments at local schools.  Another thing the girls did was visit with our elderly Sisters down at the Manor. We have some pictures with us. The Sisters love seeing the girls, who performed scenes and songs from the musical. Some of the Sisters are unable to get to the Shubert, so the girls bring the show to them.

Speaking of the Shubert, how exciting! How many years have the students been performing there?
This is our fourth happy year.

Is this a big cast?
This is a huge cast of over 100 students, with a crew of another 100 students and faculty members. We have so much support for the musical at Sacred Heart Academy – the entire school gets behind it.
