Potiskum, Nigeria (WTNH)- Officials in Nigeria say a suicide bomber disguised as a student in a school uniform detonated explosives and killed at least 48 people, most of them students, and injured over seventy people at a high school assembly in the northeastern Nigerian town of Potiskum.
A teacher at the Government Science Secondary School (GSS) in Potiskum told Reuters news service that the bomb went off as students were arriving for a morning assembly. Soldiers rushed to the scene but were chased away by people angry at the military’s inability to halt the violence.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but the area is close to where the Boko Haram Sunni Muslim Militants have staged an insurgency in the last five years. Boko Haram is Hausa for “Western education is sinful.” The group is responsible for abducting hundreds of students and killing thousands in its fight for an Islamist state. Over the past few weeks, Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks and their leader has rejected a ceasefire agreement.
