NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – A New Haven man woke up Monday morning to find a stranger in his bedroom trying to take his laptop.
William Genova questioned the man and followed him as he started for the door of his Elm Street Apartment. The burglar threatened Genova if he didn’t let him leave. That didn’t stop 21-year-old Genova from chasing after the suspect.
The New Haven Register reports that they ran through several backyards, even having to hop fences until they wound up on Dwight Street near the Marriott Hotel parking lot. The man stopped running to try to prove to Genova that he didn’t steal anything by showing him the contents of his duffle bag. It was at that time that a New Haven cop, Officer Chad Curry, happened to pass them and stopped to see what was going on.
When the suspect him coming over, he ran away, only to have Officer Curry catch up with him again. Curry had to use pepper spray on the suspect, Eleam Djamal. Police say Djamal is a convicted felon with a long rap sheet and that he took $40.00 from Genova. The paper says Djamal admits to committing another burglary in the same building.
He now faces several charges including burglary and larceny.
