NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – The holidays are just around the corner.  It’s a time when you might have a few more alcoholic beverages that usual with parties and family functions.  It’s also a time when people turn to alcohol not just for fun, but to deal with the stress of the holidays. Nicole Tomlin of Pop Weight Loss and Kara Ganssle a nutritionist join News 8’s Brian Spyros on set to talk about the dangers of drinking and what you can do to combat excessive drinking.

Why do people tend to overindulge in alcohol during the holiday season? What role does stress play in fueling excessive alcohol consumption?

Alcohol provides temporary relief during stressful times.  But having alcohol in excess can actually cause more problems not only at the time of drinking it but also down the road.

What are the effects of alcohol abuse? Can excessive drinking lead to weight gain?

Increased family problems
Liver disease
Nerve damage
High blood pressure
Diet
What methods can viewers use to control their alcohol consumption? Where can viewers go for help and support?
Drink in moderation
Avoid hard liqueur
Lowering your drinking limits and decreasing the frequency, quantity, intensity (alcohol content), or duration of alcohol use.
For severe alcohol addiction there are alcohol recovery centers in and around the community
